Fuel cell vehicles are on California’s roads today. Although the numbers are small, more passenger cars and transit buses are deployed every few months. These vehicles fuel at more than 20 hydrogen stations.
Nearly 1,000 fire and life safety professionals have already learned how to respond to incidents involving fuel cell vehicles or hydrogen stations.
CaFCP offers ongoing education and dialog through community workshops and other forums. |

CaFCP Emergency Responder Workshops for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Vehicles cover three primary areas:
- Basic hydrogen properties and handling
- How a fuel cell and fuel cell vehicle works
- Fuel cell vehicle and bus safety systems
- Awareness information for responding to several FCV incidents
Since the start of the ER program in 2002, CaFCP staff have coordinated efforts and collaborated with the a variety of local fire departments and safety experts, the California Office of the State Fire Marshal, the US Department of Energy’s hydrogen safety training program, and NASFM’s Hydrogen Executive Leadership Program (HELP).
CaFCP also works closely with other education efforts, such as Michigan’s NextEnergy, the National Hydrogen Association, and the British Columbia Hydrogen Highway to offer ER educational workshops outside of California.
